An overheating engine is one of the most serious warning signs your car can give you. If ignored, it can quickly lead to major engine damage and costly repairs. Understanding why your car is overheating, what warning signs to look for, and what to do if it happens can help protect your vehicle and keep you safe on the road. What Causes a Car to Overheat? Your engine relies on a carefully balanced cooling system to regulate temperature. When one part fails, overheating can occur. Common causes include: Low or Leaking Coolant: Coolant absorbs heat from the engine and dissipates it through the radiator. If levels are low or there’s a leak, the engine can overheat very quickly. Radiator or Cooling System Issues: Blocked radiators, damaged hoses, or a failing radiator cap can prevent heat from escaping the system efficiently. Faulty Thermostat: A stuck thermostat may stop coolant from flowing through the engine, causing rapid temperature spikes. Water Pump Failure: The water pump circulates coolant through the engine. If it fails, coolant won’t move properly, leading to overheating. Cooling Fan Not Working: Electric cooling fans help regulate temperature, especially at low speeds or in traffic. If the fan or sensor fails, the engine can overheat while idling. Heavy Loads or Towing: Towing, long drives, or driving in hot weather can place extra strain on the cooling system—especially if it’s already underperforming. Warning Signs Your Car Is Overheating Keep an eye out for these symptoms: Temperature gauge rising into the red Steam or smoke from under the bonnet Sweet or burning smell Warning lights on the dashboard Loss of engine power Coolant leaking under the vehicle If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to act immediately. What to Do If Your Car Overheats If your car starts to overheat while driving: Pull over safely as soon as possible Turn the engine off and allow it to cool Do NOT remove the radiator cap while hot Wait at least 20–30 minutes before checking coolant levels If safe, top up coolant with the correct type (or water in an emergency only) If the problem persists, do not continue driving Driving an overheating vehicle can cause warped cylinder heads, blown head gaskets, or complete engine failure. When to Have Your Cooling System Checked If your car has overheated once, it’s important to have it inspected—even if it seems fine afterward. Overheating can cause hidden damage that may not be immediately obvious. At Golden Plains Mechanical, we can: Pressure test cooling systems Diagnose overheating causes Repair leaks, thermostats, water pumps, and radiators Provide honest advice before small issues become major repairs If your vehicle is running hot or showing warning signs, don’t wait until it breaks down. Golden Plains Mechanical can inspect your cooling system and get you back on the road with confidence. Book online or speak with our friendly team today to book an inspection. Have more questions about your car overheating? Why is my car overheating but there’s no coolant leak? Your car can overheat even without a visible leak. Common causes include a faulty thermostat, failed radiator fan, blocked radiator, air trapped in the cooling system, or a failing water pump. Can low engine oil cause a car to overheat? Yes. Engine oil helps lubricate and reduce friction. Low or degraded oil increases friction inside the engine, which can raise operating temperatures and contribute to overheating. Why does my car overheat when idling but not when driving? This usually points to a cooling fan issue. When driving, airflow cools the radiator naturally. When idling, the radiator fan must do the work — if it’s not operating correctly, the engine can overheat. Why is my car overheating when driving on the highway? Highway overheating is often caused by restricted coolant flow, such as a blocked radiator, failing water pump, collapsed hose, or incorrect coolant mixture. Is overheating more common in summer? Yes. High temperatures place extra strain on cooling systems, especially in regional and highway driving conditions. Can a bad thermostat cause overheating? Yes. If a thermostat becomes stuck closed, coolant cannot circulate through the engine, causing temperatures to rise quickly. Is it safe to drive an overheating car to the mechanic? No. Even short distances can cause serious engine damage. If your car is overheating, it’s best to stop driving and have it inspected or towed if necessary. How long should I wait before opening the bonnet after overheating? Wait at least 20–30 minutes. Opening the cooling system while hot can cause severe burns due to pressurised coolant Why does my car lose power when it overheats? Modern vehicles reduce engine power to protect internal components when overheating is detected. This is known as limp mode. What does steam coming from under the bonnet mean? Steam usually indicates coolant boiling or escaping from the system due to overheating. This requires immediate attention. Can overheating damage my engine permanently? Yes. Severe or repeated overheating can cause warped cylinder heads, blown head gaskets, cracked engine blocks, and internal engine damage. How often should coolant be replaced? Most vehicles require coolant replacement every 2–5 years, depending on the manufacturer and coolant type. Regular servicing ensures this is done correctly. Why does my temperature gauge fluctuate? Fluctuating temperatures can indicate air in the cooling system, a failing thermostat, electrical sensor issues, or inconsistent coolant flow. Does overheating always mean a major repair? Not always. Early diagnosis can often identify minor issues like a leaking hose or faulty sensor before major damage occurs. How can I tell if my radiator fan is working? When the engine reaches operating temperature, the fan should switch on. If it doesn’t, there may be a fault with the fan, relay, fuse, or temperature sensor. Should I use water instead of coolant in an emergency? In an emergency, water can be used temporarily, but proper coolant should be added as soon as possible. Water alone doesn’t provide corrosion protection or proper heat transfer.

Understanding why your car is overheating, what warning signs to look for, and what to do if it happens can help protect your vehicle and keep you safe on the road.

New Car Service in Bannockburn

Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At Golden Plains Mechanical in Bannockburn, we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At Golden Plains Mechanical, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Keep your engine healthy with clean air filters. Improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend engine life. Visit Golden Plains Mechanical for expert maintenance and reliable car servicing.
